Textual Chef is a plain-text cooking reference: more than 2,000 recipes printed the way a reference manual would print them. Ingredients, quantities, method. The page opens on the recipe and ends shortly after it.

The premise

Most recipe pages put the recipe last: an essay about a grandmother, three ad units, a video that follows you down the page, and then, near the footer, the recipe. We print the recipe first, because it is the only part you came for. That is the whole idea. Everything else about the product follows from it.

The principles

1. The recipe is the page. Nothing loads above it and nothing interrupts it. There are no ads anywhere, on any tier; removing them is the premise, not a feature.
2. Quantities are printed inside the step that uses them. "Add 2 cups of the stock" rather than a number you scroll back up to find with wet hands. One control scales the whole recipe: half, standard, or double batch, every quantity recomputed in place.
3. Every recipe is free to read. All of them, method included, no account. The recipe index is public and fully crawlable.
4. The subscription is the tools, never the recipes. What costs money is the kitchen tooling around the reference: meal planner, aisle-ordered shopping list, pantry lookup, recipe import and generation. The recipes themselves are never behind the paywall.
5. Nothing is invented. No stock photography of somebody else's dinner, and no star ratings, because we do not have verified reviews to base them on. When we do not know a thing, we do not print it.
6. Machines are welcome readers. The catalog is published machine-readably: a JSON feed of every recipe, a plain-text version of every entry (append recipe.md to any recipe URL), and llms.txt for AI assistants. If an assistant answers your cooking question from one of our pages, that is the site working as intended. We ask only for a link to the source page.
