Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 yolks large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tsp vodka
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/8 tsp fine salt
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. 1

Mix 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tbsp granulated sugar, and 1/8 tsp fine salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add 2 yolks large egg yolks, 2 tbsp sour cream, 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter, and 2 tsp vodka.

  2. 2

Knead into a smooth, firm dough for about 5 minutes. Wrap it in plastic and rest for 30 minutes.

  3. 3

Divide the dough in half. Roll one piece on a floured surface as thin as you can, about 1/16 inch. Keep the other piece wrapped while you work.

  4. 4

Cut the sheet into strips about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long. Cut a slit in the center of each strip, then pull one end through it to make a loose bow.

  5. 5

Heat 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying) in a deep, heavy pot to 360°F. Fry the faworki a few at a time, about 1 minute per side, until golden and blistered.

  6. 6

Lift them out with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Dust with 2 tbsp powdered sugar (for dusting) once they are cool.

Questions

How long does Faworki take?

As written, 60 minutes: 40 of prep and 20 of cooking. The longest single stretch is step 2 (30 minutes): "Wrap it in plastic and rest for 30 minutes."

How hot should the oil be for Faworki?

For Faworki, the frying oil is held at 360 F (about 180 C) in step 5. Hotter scorches the outside before the inside cooks, and cooler turns it greasy.

Can I make Faworki gluten-free?

Yes. The gluten in Faworki is 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. Swap the flour for a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking blend (where it only thickens a sauce, half as much cornstarch also works). Everything else proceeds as written.

Is Faworki vegan?

No, though it is vegetarian. What keeps it from vegan is 2 tbsp sour cream, 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and 2 yolks large egg yolks. For fully plant-based entries, see the vegan dessert collection.

Does Faworki contain eggs?

Yes: 2 yolks large egg yolks. The full allergen list for this entry is gluten, dairy and eggs. Packaged ingredients vary by brand, so check labels if the allergy is serious.
