Fried Apple Hand Pies
Crispy fried hand pies filled with spiced cinnamon apples and topped with a sweet glaze coating.
Ingredients
- 4 cups Granny Smith apples, diced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cubed
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, chilled
- 1/2 cup ice water
- 4 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp milk

Combine 4 cups diced Granny Smith apples, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, and 2 tbsp cubed unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat for 8 minutes until softened, then cool.

Mix 3 cups all-purpose flour and 1 tsp salt in a bowl, cut in 1/2 cup chilled vegetable shortening, then stir in 1/2 cup ice water to form a dough.

Roll dough out on a floured surface, cut into circles, place apple filling in center, fold over, and crimp edges sealed.

Heat 4 cups vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F and fry pies for 3 minutes per side until golden brown.

Whisk 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 tbsp milk together, then brush glaze over warm pies before serving.
