Mint Julep

The iconic Southern cocktail: fresh mint muddled with simple syrup and packed over crushed ice, then topped with good bourbon. Served in a frosted silver or metal cup, it is refreshing sipping for warm weather.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 8 leaves fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tbsp simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)
  • 1.5 cups crushed ice
  • 1 fresh mint sprig (for garnish)

Instructions

    Chill a julep cup or highball glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes.

    Place 8 leaves fresh mint leaves in the bottom of the chilled cup. Add 1 tbsp simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) and gently muddle the mint just enough to bruise and release its oils.

    Pack the cup tightly with 1.5 cups crushed ice.

    Pour 2 oz bourbon whiskey over the ice. Stir briefly to combine.

    Top with additional crushed ice to form a mound. Garnish with 1 fresh mint sprig (for garnish) nestled into the ice. Serve immediately with a short straw.
