Ingredients

  • 16 oz tempeh, sliced 1/4-in thick
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Whisk together 1/4 cup kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), 2 tbsp soy sauce, 4 cloves minced garlic cloves, 1/2 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp ground turmeric, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 cup water in a shallow bowl.

  2. 2

Add 16 oz sliced 1/4-in thick tempeh slices and toss to coat. Let marinate for 15 minutes.

  3. 3

Heat 1/4 cup vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When shimmering, add tempeh slices in a single layer (work in batches if needed) and pour any remaining marinade over them.

  4. 4

Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, until deep golden brown and caramelized. The marinade will reduce and coat the tempeh.

  5. 5

Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate. Serve immediately as an appetizer or snack.
