Affogato
The quintessential Italian dessert-drink: a scoop of cold vanilla gelato or ice cream "drowned" by a shot of hot espresso, creating a mesmerizing swirl of hot and cold with every spoonful.
Ingredients
- 2 scoops vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream
- 2 shots freshly brewed espresso (or strong brewed coffee), hot, freshly made
- 2 tsp amaretto liqueur (optional)
- as needed dark chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional garnish)

Place chilled serving glasses or small bowls in the freezer for 5 minutes to chill them.

Brew 2 shots hot, freshly made freshly brewed espresso (or strong brewed coffee) and keep it hot; set aside.

Place one large scoop of vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream into each chilled glass.

Immediately pour one shot of hot freshly brewed espresso (or strong brewed coffee) directly over each scoop of vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream.

If using, drizzle 2 tsp amaretto liqueur (optional) over the top. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional garnish) if desired. Serve immediately with a small spoon.
