Apfelkuchen
Spiced Austrian apple cake with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a crumbly streusel. Warm and comforting autumn favorite.
Ingredients
- 3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 oz unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 lb Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced, sliced
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for streusel)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (for streusel)
- 2 oz cold unsalted butter, cubed (for streusel), cubed
- 1/8 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.

Cream 4 oz unsalted butter, softened and 1/2 cup granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.

Beat in 2 large eggs one at a time, then add 1/4 tsp vanilla extract.

Whisk together 3 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, and 1/8 tsp salt.

Fold the dry ingredients into the butter mixture alternately with 1/4 cup whole milk.

Spread the batter into the prepared pan.

Toss 2 lb sliced Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced with 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, then arrange in a single layer over the batter.

For the streusel, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for streusel), 1/4 cup brown sugar (for streusel), and salt.

Work in 2 oz cubed cold unsalted butter, cubed (for streusel) with your fingers until the mixture is crumbly.

Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the apples.
