Café con Leche and Tostadas
A classic Cuban breakfast featuring strong, sweetened espresso combined with warm milk, served alongside buttered, toasted Cuban bread.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup dark roast ground espresso
- 1.5 cups water
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 loaf Cuban bread, sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

Fill the bottom chamber of a Moka pot with 1.5 cups water and pack 1/4 cup dark roast ground espresso into the filter basket.

Assemble the pot and heat on the stovetop over medium heat until espresso begins to brew.

Spoon the first few dark drops of brewing espresso into a mug containing 2 tbsp granulated sugar and beat vigorously into a thick foam.

Pour the remaining brewed espresso into the sugar foam and stir until blended.

Warm 1 cup whole milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until hot but not boiling.

Spread 2 tbsp softened unsalted butter onto the cut sides of 1 loaf sliced Cuban bread.

Press the bread buttered-side down in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown and flat.

Divide the espresso and hot milk equally into two mugs, stirring together, and serve with toasted bread.
