Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp loose-leaf Assam black tea (or 2 bags)
  • 4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 6 slices fresh ginger, thinly sliced
  • 6 whole black peppercorns
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar or honey

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water with 4 lightly crushed green cardamom pods, 1 cinnamon stick, 6 slices thinly sliced fresh ginger, 6 whole black peppercorns, and 2 whole cloves. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

  2. 2

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer the spices for 3 minutes to bloom their flavor.

  3. 3

Add 2 tsp loose-leaf Assam black tea (or 2 bags) to the saucepan and simmer for 2 minutes more.

  4. 4

Pour in 1 cup whole milk and bring back to a gentle simmer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until frothy and fragrant. Watch carefully so the milk does not boil over.

  5. 5

Stir in 2 tsp granulated sugar or honey until dissolved.

  6. 6

Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into two mugs and serve immediately.
