Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs Swiss chard, chopped
  • 4 tbsp Butter
  • 4 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 1/8 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 4 oz Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 2 oz Parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 375°F.

  2. 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 1.5 lbs chopped Swiss chard and cook for 2-3 minutes until tender. Drain well, pressing out excess moisture.

  3. 3

Make a béchamel sauce: melt 4 tbsp Butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 4 tbsp All-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

  4. 4

Gradually add 2 cups Whole milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

  5. 5

Remove from heat and season with 1/8 tsp Nutmeg, 1/2 tsp Salt, and 1/4 tsp Black pepper.

  6. 6

Spread a thin layer of béchamel in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

  7. 7

Layer half the chard over the sauce.

  8. 8

Top with half the remaining sauce.

  9. 9

    Layer the remaining chard.

  10. 10

    Finish with the remaining sauce.

  11. 11

Mix 4 oz shredded Gruyere cheese and 2 oz grated Parmesan cheese together and sprinkle over the top.

  12. 12

Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling at the edges.

  13. 13

Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Questions

Can I make Swiss Chard Gratin dairy-free?

Not cleanly. Here the dairy (4 tbsp Butter, 2 cups Whole milk, 4 oz Gruyere cheese, shredded, 2 oz Parmesan cheese, grated) is the backbone of the dish, and plant-based substitutes change both its texture and its flavor. If you need strictly dairy-free, start from the dairy-free side collection instead.

Can I make Swiss Chard Gratin gluten-free?

Yes. The gluten in this entry is 4 tbsp All-purpose flour. Swap the flour for a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking blend (where it only thickens a sauce, half as much cornstarch also works). Everything else proceeds as written.

How long does Swiss Chard Gratin keep?

Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and eat them within three days. Reheat covered in a 300 F oven until warmed through.

Can I halve or double Swiss Chard Gratin?

Yes. As written it serves 4. Every ingredient in this entry carries precomputed half and double quantities, and the app's batch dial rewrites them inside each step. Doubled, split it across two pans and rotate them halfway; one crowded pan bakes unevenly.
