Kataifi
Crispy shredded phyllo pastries stuffed with spiced walnuts and soaked in a scented honey syrup.
Ingredients
- 1 lb kataifi dough, thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1.5 cups water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp honey

Combine 2 cups granulated sugar, 1.5 cups water, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 2 tbsp honey in a saucepan, bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes and cool completely.

Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and mix 2 cups finely chopped walnuts, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp ground cloves in a medium bowl.

Gently untangle 1 lb thawed kataifi dough strands in a large bowl and toss with 1 cup melted unsalted butter until thoroughly coated.

Take small bundles of dough, place a tablespoon of nut mix on one end, roll tightly into cylinders, and arrange in a baking dish.

Bake for 45 minutes until deep golden brown.

Pour the cooled syrup over the hot baked pastries immediately and let soak for 2 hours before serving.
