Caldo de Piranha
A savory Brazilian fish soup made by simmering piranha with aromatics, tomatoes, and fresh cilantro into a rich broth.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs cleaned piranha fish, chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 3 tomatoes, diced
- 6 cups water
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 tsp salt

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Sauté 1 diced yellow onion, 4 minced garlic cloves, and 1 diced green bell pepper for 5 minutes until soft.

Add 3 diced tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes until softened.

Add 2 lbs chopped cleaned piranha fish, 6 cups water, and 1 tsp salt, then bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 145°F.

Strain broth through a fine sieve to remove bones, blending the soft vegetable broth if preferred, then return broth to pot.

Stir in 2 tbsp lime juice and top with 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro before serving.
